"My wife gave birth to our 1st baby on May 4, 2011. One of the attending nurses advised us that there was a "doula" volunteering her time. My wife and I were not really sure what a doula was and how she could assist my wife who seemed to be in constant pain due to her contractions. We also wanted the birth of our child to be private matter due to cultural differences. My wife and I agreed to speak with this doula, who seemed to have a calming affect as she entered the birthing area and began to speak. Ms. Correia immediately began to apply certain pressures and techniques that appeared to help relieve my wife from the more intense contractions she was experiencing. Ms. Correia seemed to take away some of our anxieties and stress as she explained the birthing process and how to cope with the pain my wife seemed to be going through. My wife's pain seemed become more intense, but Ms. Correia stayed with her and talked her through it. Completely exhausted after being up for over 26 hours, my wife opted for the epidural so that she could rest. My wife soon fell asleep and Ms. Correia had conversation with me. My wife was so appreciative of Ms. Correia's services that she was more than willing to have Ms. Correia witness the birth of our child. Not only had she assisted my wife, she was also quite encouraging to me! This is an amazing person who we will always remember and likely acquire her services if we have any future children. When my wife dialated to 10 cm, Ms. Correia again was hands on and assisting where she could. As our baby was born Ms. Correia captured every moment by taking pictures of the birth with our camera. Thank you so much Ms. Deb "Dragonfly Doula" Correia!" -- The Johnsons
"I was blessed to meet Deb through the Open Arms program. When I met with Deb she was wonderful. She was such a warm and caring person and listened to everything I had to say about my hopes and fears of having a baby and being a single mother. Everything she said was supportive and she shared her wealth of knowledge with me. She helped me to feel good about myself and the pregnancy and to know that when the time came she would be there for the delivery to support me. During the delivery Deb was AMAZING!!! Even though I had to be induced she was right there from the beginning to the end. She helped to keep me comfortable and focused. She knew just what to do without me having to say a word…she just knew and did it. Even though my mom and sister were able to be with me as well, Deb is what made it the best experience possible. I don’t know what I would have done without her support. It’s hard to express in words what it truly meant to have her there. If I have another child some day, I hope Deb can be there again." -- D.W.
